How To Choose The Perfect Discs For You

Okay, so you’ve been casually playing disc golf for a little while now, and you’ve decided that you’re in love with the sport. Now, it’s time to invest in some good-quality discs. With so many brands, types, and styles out there, it can be hard to narrow it down and figure out which is the right disc for you. Fortunately, the team from Disc Connection, your local disc golf shop, is here to help. We’ll give you all the information you need to choose a few discs you can use as you continue to improve your game.

How Do Flight Ratings Work?

If you’re looking through your local disc golf shop in Perth and wondering what the numbers on each disc mean, you wouldn’t be alone. These numbers represent your disc’s flight rating, which is kind of like your disc’s personality. Ratings are broken into four categories; speed, glide, turn, and fade, and they make your disc entirely unique from any other disc.

  • Speed: 1-14. The speed indicates the rate at which the disc can travel through the air, with a rating of 1 indicating a slow disc and 14 indicating a high-speed disc. Faster discs cut into the wind with less effort, but they’re harder to control. So we’d recommend beginners choose slower discs to practice their technique.
  • Glide: 1-7. A disc’s glide describes its ability to maintain loft during flight. Beginners wanting to get more distance should choose discs with more glide.
  • Turn: +1- -5. This number indicates the tendency of a disc to turn over or bank to the right. +1 discs are more resistant to turning. Discs with less turn are more accurate in the wind, but discs with more turn are easier for beginners to throw.
  • Fade: 0-5. A disc’s fade refers to how the disc flies at the end of the flight. A rating of 0 means the disc will finish straight, whereas a 5 means the disc will hook hard at the end of the flight.

Our Top Picks For All Skill Levels

No two discs are alike, so it’s important to pick one that suits your ability. There’s no sense in buying discs made for experts if you’re just starting out. You won’t be able to use them properly, and you’ll become disinterested in the sport, which is the last thing we want. The Disc Connection team has come up with some of our favourite discs for each skill level, so you can pick the right one for you every time.

  • Beginners. You’ll want to choose discs that do exactly what you need them to do, nothing more and nothing less. At this stage in your disc golf career, you should be focused on improving your technique more than anything. Try practising with these discs.

  • Intermediates. This is when you’ll want to start trying new tricks and taking your game to the next level, so you’ll need to invest in discs that are capable of doing exactly what you want them to do.

  • Advanced. If you’re looking for new discs to test your skill and challenge you on the course, we have a few suggestions that we think you’re going to have a lot of fun with.

Why Do More People Choose Disc Connection As Their Favourite Disc Golf Shop?

If you’re looking for a frisbee golf shop in Australia, you can’t go past Disc Connection. There are a few reasons why more disc golfers choose us.

  • We’re disc golfers ourselves. The Disc Connection team live and breathe disc golf, and as avid golfers ourselves, we understand what our customers are looking for in their equipment. We’re in a unique position to offer guidance and advice to newcomers to the sport and help seasoned players improve their game. If you have any questions or are looking for tips and tricks, don’t hesitate to reach out. We love hearing from others in the disc golf community.
  • We regularly attend disc golf events. If you ever find yourself at an Australian disc golf event, you may find our pop-up disc golf shop nearby. We love getting out and about and meeting other disc golfers throughout Australia.

  • We have the most stock. We started Disc Connection because we were frustrated with the lack of discs and frisbee golf shops in Australia. When we launched Disc Connection, we made it our goal to provide a store that has the highest amount of premium-quality disc golf stock at the lowest prices Australia-wide, and that’s exactly what we’ve created.
  • Sell and trade options. At Disc Connection, we understand that while your disc golf equipment might not be right for you anymore, it might just be perfect for someone else. That’s why we have sell and trade options on our website.
  • We price match. Because we’ve been in the disc golf scene for more than a decade, we know there’s a tendency for businesses to inflate equipment prices. At Disc Connection, we’re not about that at all. Instead, we price match all our items because it’s important to offer our customers the best, most affordable prices.
  • We ship Australia-wide. Disc golf should be accessible to all Australians, so whether you’re playing disc golf in Sydney or Cairns, we’ll ship discs and equipment to your door.
